I have been teaching saxophone for a number of years now and am comfortable with total beginners to more advanced pupils.
As a freelance saxophonist I've performed in various groups across the country and abroad; from playing for royalty in Morocco to jamming onstage with Larry Graham from Sly & the Family Stone.
As a member of original bands The Killer Meters and The Getup I've co-written & performed on songs that have been played on Radio 2, BBC6 Music and XFM and have featured on the BBC's TV coverage of the British Grand Prix as well as the US TV show So You think You Can Dance.
For the last few years I've also been a band member of Mod legends Secret Affair, touring the UK and recording on their most recent album.
All ages & abilities are welcome, whether you'd like to study towards exams or are learning to play for fun.
I have experience teaching the Trinity Classical syllabus and the ABRSM Classical and Jazz grades. However, if studying for grades doesn't appeal to you, I'm able to create a bespoke lesson plan tailored to your requirements.

Stephen taught my 12 year old daughter Miriam to play the saxophone in weekly lessons from September to December 2013. She had played other musical instruments before, but not a reed instrument. Stephen helped her understand how to play the saxophone and she made very good progress in the time he was her teacher. He was always very supportive, patient and thorough. We were very sorry when he stopped being able to teach her because he left London, and we would recommend him to anyone who would like their child to learn the saxophone."
I had lessons with Stephen for over a year. I chose to have lessons after returning to saxophone playing following a long break. The lessons were initially focused on technique but within a few lessons I was able to start improvising and this was the focus of lessons from then on. Stephen managed to teach me how to improvise, a skill that I had failed to learn with other teachers. Thank you!
Stephen is a very friendly, flexible and supportive teacher. Lessons were well prepared in advance and tailored to my individual requirements.
I would not hesitate in recommending Stephen as a teacher."
