A year after graduating from London College of Contemporary Music with a 2:1 I am now working as a private drum teacher. I currently teach a range of age ranges, from 6-50, a range of styles from orchestral to heavy metal, jazz and reggae. I use a range of resources. Books such as Stick Control, New Breed, Future Sounds, Art of Bop Drumming, The Sound of brushes, Carmine Appice Realistic Rock for Kids, all Trinity and Rockschool books for drum grades. Technology such as Noteflight, Apps (Amazing Slow Downer, Metronome), Spotify, Cubase (to chop and change backing tracks for students), whatsapp (for sending short demos of exercises to students).
I work with each student to establish what their goals are and use manageable challenges to keep them motivated and inspired. Private tuition helped me to deal with different people, and to approach some students with a less academic approach, i.e. learning difficulties such as ADHD, they may need less talking and more doing. I give students specific homework tasks, not giving them too much information at the start.
Teddy Rocks Festival, Rockschool, Trinity Guildhall, London Centre of Contemporary Music.
I use technology to help me, apps such as Spotify and Amazing Slow Downer (slows down any song without changing pitch, links to your spotify playlists), these make the student able to play along to songs faster, even if it’s a little slower they feel like they are actually drumming! Online notation Software such as Noteflight means I can transcribe drum parts from songs, play the score back so the student can her how the drum part sounds, and also share them with my student, so they can practice anywhere with the internet.
Transcribing, memorising and performing songs and solos is something which benefits me and my students, i.e. some students love The Beatles, so we look at those songs, others like Florence and The Machine.
I have Grade 5 Music Theory, and play beginner guitar, bass and piano. I studied Composition at Uni, writing music for Jazz Combos, String Quartets and Latin Bands.
My studio flat, a bright and welcoming space filled with instruments; my electric kit, percussion, guitar, piano.
