After getting my Bachelors in Music from Birmingham University I spent time living and playing flute across China, Spain and Sri Lanka before returning back home to the UK. This sense of adventure and exploration of the unknown directly translates into my music, which has to be adaptable and draw from different traditions to fit the variety of projects I work on. I have a Masters in Creative Musicianship from Leeds College of Music during which I specialised in contemporary classical flute performance. I graduated with the highest mark out of all the Masters students. I regularly play across the UK and Europe with Cosmic Rock band GURU and continue to work with electronic musicians, composers and orchestras to champion flute.
I teach flute from beginner to advanced students of any age. I have a holistic approach to teaching so tailor each lesson to the individual students needs.
Because each lesson is highly individualised, the ‘average lesson’ does not exist, but an hour might start off with some warm ups of stretching and breathing, followed by an improvisation to a favourite song using a technique from a piece being worked on, then an in-depth look at tone, and finally putting these things into practice in a piece.
At the end of each lesson we'll create a bespoke practice plan so that you have a clear understanding of how and what to practice at home. A follow up email detailing everything covered in the lesson and a summary of the practice plan can be sent out on request.
I teache across all genres and love to mix up students playing so they can try something new. This might be help writing your own cadenza to a Mozart Concerto, or learning how to play tremelos like Lizzo (although I can’t teach twerking!) I'm particularly passionate about improvisation and often uses improv techniques to help explain new techniques.
This could be working towards ABRSM/ Trinity exams, learning how to play with other people or for the joy of learning to play a new instrument. I believe in a whole flute way of teaching, so lessons can include work on techniques, tone, pieces and breathing towards the goal of playing with ease.
I have been trained classically and still have deep roots with this type of music but I have also branched out into Irish, Rock and other contemporary genres. At the moment I'm working a lot with electronics and improvisation.
I teach from my own studio which means that I can easily record students so that they can see their progress. I also create online lesson notes so students can look back at what they've done in the lesson as well as find clear, defined practice goals to work on between lessons.
I also offer depping and session work. I love to collaborate with people and am always looking for people to work with.
I teach from my flute studio in York (YO10) and online.

Free 45 Minute Consultation Lesson
The first lesson is all about getting to know each other. It will start with a very relaxed chat over a warm drink about what you’re looking for in your playing, what sort of music you like to listen to and play, and how I can help you. Once you’re feeling comfortable, the flutes can come out and we can play something together. I can then help set some realistic goals and aims for your lessons going forward.
All for completely free with no pressure to rebook.
