Ten years providing one-to-one and group guitar tuition to adults and children of all ages.
Six years as a member of the UK's Registry of Guitar Tutors guiding students through official RGT grade exams.
Ten years touring/session guitar work, with acts such as Progressive Metal band End Begin, and recently on acclaimed platformer video game Unbox.
Five years freelance music production/composition work with multiple self-released titles and work on interactive media projects.
I try to overcome the barriers of the conventional student-teacher relationship to create an environment that optimises the learning process.
This allows me to provide a unique experience and programme of study that is catered to suit each individual player.
My approach is to help improve musical knowledge and technical ability through practical examples.
I encourage a mindset of personal exploration and self-development to build skills in guitar playing as well as transferable life skills.
Skills such as self-discipline and self-motivation that can be applied to anything, for either aspiring professionals or hobbyist guitar players.
With ten years of experience teaching adults and children, my lessons are highly adaptable to suit players of all ages and abilities.
Complete beginners, intermediate, and advanced level players are all welcome.
In addition to personalised lessons and learning programmes, I also provide lessons for accredited exams.
These are typical for anyone looking to work towards a formal grade or guitar qualification.
Formal qualifications provide an excellent goal to work towards and an effective means of measuring your progress.
On top of that, they are a great way to enhance a CV, or even contribute towards UCAS points for university applications.
As an RGT registered tutor I can provide lessons towards all RGT guitar exams, and I also provide tuition towards other graded guitar exams from Rock School.
I have an excellent pass rate with all my students who take the exams, most of whom achieve either a merit or distinction award.
As a player, my main interests lie with advanced lead playing and techniques such as legato, tapping, sweep/economy picking, pick slanting, and harmonics.
I like to focus on finding musically appropriate places to use these techniques, without simply demonstrating technique for the sake of technique.
My own musical style sits within the world of progressive rock and metal, where I enjoy experimenting with advanced harmony and unusual chord voicings.
As a tutor, however, I am not limited only to these topics or this area of music in what I teach.
I continuously push myself to maintain a high level of understanding and ability in all aspects of guitar playing and all styles of music.
This means I am able to cover topics such as rhythm, harmony, scales, fretboard knowledge, reading music, and more, across all levels and styles of music.
All of my lessons are carried out at my home studio in Kirkstall, Leeds.
This allows instant access to essential facilities such as guitars, amps, and my extensive range of teaching materials.
Here, I also have recording facilities to record students' performances that they can then share with friends and family.
This is invaluable for students when learning how to assess their own playing and progress by listening to recordings.

"After going to David for lessons I began improving at a much better rate once he had shown me the right techniques and approach to practice that I wasn't learning from books and DVDs alone. His lessons are always fun and I highly recommend David as a tutor to anyone looking for lessons."
"I've worked with David on a number of projects over the years and the one thing that strikes me most of all on each new project is his adaptability as a musician. His ability to turn his hand to so many different styles of music makes him an invaluable musician, which is why he is always first on my list as a guitarist."
"Very competent and professional, friendly and skilled. Would certainly recommend to others. Fair price and good location. David has helped me progress very quickly and is a great motivator."
"I've been going to David for lessons for over two years now and would recommend him to anyone. As a teacher myself, I can see how committed he is to developing students abilities in a well rounded way, which is one of the reasons I've kept up the guitar."
