Liam Stogden
Qualifications:
Liam holds a BA in Popular Music Studies (2:1) and a BTEC National Diploma in Popular Music, both from the renowned Leeds College of Music. He also has ABRSM music theory grade 5, and Trinity Rockschool guitar grade 5
Experience:
Liam Stogden is a well-seasoned guitarist, having been performing for 8 years with a number of different bands of varying genres such as Rock, Pop, Jazz, Latin, Soul and Irish Traditional; and at a number of large venues and events such as Fuse Leeds at The Wardrobe, The Wakefield Jazz Club, The Cockpit, The Hifi and The Venue.
As part of a professional function band he recently played at the world-famous Pinewood Studios. He has also worked in a pit band for local productions of popular musical theatre.
Liam plays electric, acoustic (nylon and steel strung) and bass guitars, and also composes his own music. As a session musician Liam has played on several studio albums for independent artists (of varying genres) from across the country. He has also played live on BBC Radio Leeds, and at Roundhay Park at the Sport Relief event.
All of this performance experience brings to Liam’s teaching more than just a thorough understanding of guitar technique, music theory and musicianship; but also what it takes to be a good performer.
He began teaching privately three years ago, and has never looked back. The experiences he has gained from his own training, tuition and work as a professional guitarist are helping other aspiring musicians to realise their potential. Liam Stogden’s passion for music, his drive and hard-working nature is contagious, and inspires his students to be the best musicians they can be.
Liam teaches in a relaxed, friendly environment, tailoring each lesson to the needs and wants of the individual student. Students are always encouraged to explore their own musical style, but are guided along the way to help them to achieve the type of sound they aspire to.
Liam uses his knowledge as a composer to create unique, effective and enjoyable exercises to help students to develop their technique; which can then be put to use in learning and rehearsing pieces. Music theory is integrated into practical tuition to help students to develop into well-rounded musicians.
Syllabi:
Liam can teach to ABRSM or Trinity Rockschool syllabi. Again, he tailors the lesson content to individual student.
Specialties:
Liam’s specialities lie in jazz, blues, rock, pop and funk styles; improvisation and how to play effective solos as well as instruction on how to play as part of an ensemble or as an accompanist. His thorough knowledge of harmony coupled with his excellent ear mean that he can help to develop students’ musicianship beyond simply learning to play the guitar.
Other Services, Areas of Knowledge & Musicianship:
Liam also teaches composition and music theory, upon the request of the student. He has facilities including a Mac with Logic Pro and Sibelius programmes, which enable both Liam and his students to record and edit music, and also write, transpose or arrange scores using notation or tablature.
